Take a minute and consider how much sitting you do in an average day. You sit in your car while you commute to work or take the kids to school. Once at work, you sit at a desk for most of the day with only short breaks. When you get home, you’re likely to sit down with the family and relax watching television in order to unwind. Sitting has been called the “new smoking” because of the dangers it can wreak on your health. Such sedentary behavior is linked to a rise in diabetes, cancer, and obesity. Here are some other health risks that might not seem as obvious but that can be just as devastating to your quality of life.
1. Muscle Degeneration
You’ve heard of the saying, “use it or lose it” and nowhere is this more evident than when it comes to maintaining your muscles. Slumping on the couch to watch television or in your office chair, all day doesn’t give your muscles the workout they need in order to support your body adequately. If your core muscles aren’t strong, it can lead to back pain or aggravate existing back conditions, if left untreated.
2. Softening of Bones
Researchers are beginning to look at sitting as the reason for a recent uptick in the number of osteoporosis cases. Sitting instead of doing weight-bearing activities — walking, hiking and running, for example — support the growth of thicker, stronger and denser bones.
3. Poor Circulation
When you sit a great deal, your body has a difficult time putting the blood from your extremities back up to your heart. With regular movement and activity, blood circulation slows which can cause the blood to pool in your arms and legs. This poor circulation can lead to a host of conditions such as an increase in varicose veins and swollen ankles. Poor circulation can increase your chances of getting blood clots in your legs, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention.
