After an auto accident, you may be concerned about your vehicle and trying to commute you and your family everywhere you need to go until your car is fixed. You might even be concerned about the out-of-pocket expenses of the accident. While you’re preoccupied, you might neglect to realize you have whiplash–a serious neck injury. At Twin Cities Chiropractic, serving St Paul and the surrounding Minnesota region, we evaluate and treat patients who have whiplash in order to prevent serious complications.
Definition of Whiplash
Whiplash is an injury to the nerves and soft tissue of the neck. It arises from a force propelling the head and neck backward then forward rapidly. It receives its name because of the whip-like effect the impact has on the neck. A majority of cases of whiplash stem from a rear-end auto accident. Assault or sports injuries may cause whiplash as well. Usually, the symptoms subside over time, quicker with some form of treatment. You can expect symptoms for a few months.
Symptoms of Whiplash
You might not have symptoms of whiplash immediately after the incident. It may take 24 to 48 hours to show any signs. The most common signs of whiplash include neck pain, stiffness or headaches. The neck pain you experience may worsen when you move your neck. You may have a limited range of motion in your neck. You may experience back, shoulder or arm pain as well. The back pain will be in your upper back. Other symptoms include fatigue, dizziness or numbness or tingling in your arms. It’s possible you’ll have blurred vision, memory problems, depression, sleep disturbances, irritability, difficulty concentrating or ringing in your ears.
Typically, there is a low risk of complications from whiplash, but some people do experience symptoms for years to come. Our chiropractor provides you with early detection and treatment to reduce your risk of complications.
Chiropractic Treatment for Whiplash
Spinal manipulation, in particular a neck adjustment, is one of the most common neck treatments our Twin Cities chiropractor utilizes to correct whiplash. The procedure consists of the chiropractor moving the neck using gentle, yet forceful pressure to reduce irritation to the nearby nerves and soft tissue. The neck adjustment will reduce your pain and potentially increase your range of motion. It’s also possible an adjustment will enhance blood flow to the neck to promote healing in any damaged soft tissue.
Our Twin Cities chiropractor may use exercise therapy that’s tailored to your specific condition. The chiropractor will guide you through a series of exercises designed to stretch the muscles in the neck and help you regain your range of motion in your neck. The exercises increase in difficulty, so you slowly heal. Other possible treatments include massage therapy, hot and cold therapy or lifestyle advice.
